Technical Academy
Will your next job be backstage?
The Technical Academy is your chance to experience working behind the scenes in theatre and live events. We want to include as many people as possible and are offering a grant for those taking part.
Technical Academy unlocks hidden career opportunities in technical roles in live events and theatre. We want to encourage new people – especially those from under-represented communities – to gain valuable experience and join us working in technical production.
Run by the Southbank Centre, Technical Academy is delivered in partnership with The Albany, Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT), ATG, Factory International, Livewire Productions, National Theatre, Omnii Collective, Roundhouse, Royal Albert Hall, RNSS and The Production House. The first academy took place in March 2024. It was open to anyone aged 18+ who had not previously worked in the industry.
Over an intensive three weeks, participants were introduced to technical production disciplines, including lighting, sound and AV, working with inspirational tutors in supportive environments in venues across London – all while being paid a grant and London public transport costs.
Everyone who completed the programme had the opportunity to meet organisations from across the sector to find out about upcoming opportunities and plot their next career steps.
